Saudi Film Nights heads to Joburg, Durban and Cape Town for the first time

South African film lovers will get their first taste of Saudi Film Nights this October, with contemporary Saudi cinema heading to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Running from 8–14 October 2026, the programme features two feature films and two shorts across four screenings, with post-screening Q&As giving audiences an opportunity to engage with attending Saudi filmmakers.

The South African presentation is being hosted by the Joburg Film Festival (JFF) on behalf of the Saudi Film Commission.

When and where to watch Saudi Film Nights

The tour begins in Johannesburg at the Lesedi Theatre at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.

Night Courier and Irtizaz will screen on Thursday, 8 October and Friday, 9 October.

Saudi Film Nights then heads to Durban, where Siwar and First Funeral Day will be presented at The Playhouse Company’s Drama Theatre on Sunday, 11 October.

The same two films will conclude the South African programme at Cape Town’s Labia Theatre on Wednesday, 14 October.

Four Saudi films coming to South Africa

The programme moves between dark humour, family drama and intimate social observation, offering audiences different perspectives on contemporary Saudi cinema.

Night Courier follows Fahad, a struggling delivery driver navigating Riyadh after dark. His urgent need for money eventually draws him into a dangerous illicit world.

Irtizaz takes a playful look at the pressures surrounding marriage. A young divorcee attending a funeral finds herself pushed by her mother into an awkward contest for approval.

Inspired by true events, Siwar centres on Saudi and Turkish families whose lives are thrown into turmoil when DNA tests reveal that their children were accidentally switched at birth.

First Funeral Day explores grief and fractured family relationships through an estranged father who returns to his former home following the death of his child, forcing the family to confront distance and long-held truths.

Bringing Saudi and South African filmmakers together

Joburg Film Festival Festival Manager Taryn Joffe says the differences between the four films are central to the programme.

“There is no single way into a country’s cinema, and that is what makes Saudi Film Nights exciting: these four films offer very different stories and points of view. JFF is committed to bringing distinctive international cinema into conversation with South African audiences and filmmakers, and we are honoured to collaborate with the Saudi Film Commission on its first South African presentation and to deepen creative relationships between our film communities,” said Joffe.

The programme will extend beyond the screenings through opportunities for Saudi and South African filmmakers, audiences and industry communities to exchange perspectives and explore future professional collaborations.

For South African audiences, the four screenings offer an opportunity to experience different stories and creative voices emerging from contemporary Saudi filmmaking without leaving Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town.
