Caravan chocolate is back in South Africa, but only for a limited time

Remember Caravan? The chocolate bar that disappeared from South African shelves is back, but fans will need to move quickly.

Nestlé’s nostalgic favourite has returned as a limited-edition release at Checkers, priced at R15.99 and available while stocks last.

The 35g Caravan Tex Special Edition brings back the familiar combination of crisp wafer and milk chocolate, this time with a light, aerated chocolate centre.

Its surprise return gives South Africans another chance to revisit a childhood favourite, while putting the spotlight back on other much-loved treats that have disappeared over the years.

Caravan returns as a special edition

The revived chocolate is being sold as the Caravan Tex Special Edition Milk Chocolate Bar.

The 35g bar combines crisp wafer layers and milk chocolate with a light, aerated chocolate centre.

The special-edition release brings Caravan back after the chocolate was discontinued by Nestlé years ago as part of efforts to streamline its product range.

Its return follows public demand and online campaigns from South Africans calling for the nostalgic chocolate bar to make a comeback.

Where to buy Caravan chocolate

Caravan is available at Checkers and through the Shoprite Group network, with the limited-edition chocolate also appearing on Checkers Sixty60.

The 35g bar is priced at R15.99.

However, this isn’t a permanent return to shelves.

The Caravan Tex Special Edition is a temporary release and will only be available while stocks last.

That means anyone hoping to revisit a childhood favourite might not want to wait too long before looking for one.

Remember these discontinued South African favourites?

Caravan is far from the only much-loved treat to disappear from South African shelves.

The local confectionery market has seen several familiar chocolates and sweets discontinued over the years, with many still remembered by consumers hoping for a comeback.

One of the biggest losses was Nestlé’s Chocolate Log, which was discontinued after more than 50 years on the market. The tuck-shop favourite combined marshmallow on a crisp wafer covered in milk chocolate.

Nestlé South Africa also stopped local production of Quality Street in late 2025. Boxes still found locally are imported by independent retailers.

Another Nestlé favourite to disappear was Nesquik, with the strawberry and chocolate milk powders pulled from local production.

Tempo, Inside Story and other Cadbury favourites

Cadbury has also had its share of products that disappeared from South African shelves.

Tempo, with its combination of shortbread biscuit, caramel and milk chocolate, remains one of the better-known discontinued bars.

Inside Story featured a soft, creamy chocolate centre inside a crispy wafer shell, while Flake Snowflake combined white chocolate Flake with a milk chocolate coating.

Holey Moleys, the circular chocolate biscuits with a hole through the middle, are another discontinued favourite remembered by South African consumers.

More treats South Africans still remember

Beacon’s New Look and FFWD were two crispy wafer bars that disappeared during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Then there was Cadbury 7777, a multi-flavoured block chocolate that remains among the products consumers have called to see return.

Caravan’s limited revival now gives nostalgic chocolate lovers a rare opportunity to see one discontinued favourite make its way back onto shelves.

Whether any of these other familiar names will eventually receive the same treatment remains unknown.

For now, Caravan is back, but with the special edition only available while stocks last, its return could be short-lived.
