Big DStv shake-up: New packages from R99 and a standalone sports option

DStv is reportedly preparing a major shake-up of its streaming packages in South Africa, with five new options priced from R99 per month and a standalone sports package among the proposed changes.

The new streaming structure is reportedly expected to launch on 17 September 2026 and would introduce Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series and Premium packages.

The reported overhaul follows the Canal+ takeover and would give streaming customers more choice over the type of content they pay for, including separate sports and entertainment-focused options.

However, DStv has not officially confirmed the reported new packages, pricing or channel line-ups.

The changes are also reported to apply specifically to DStv Streaming and not existing satellite decoder packages.

What are the reported new DStv package prices?

Under the reported new structure, DStv Starter would become the cheapest streaming option at R99 per month with 85 channels.

DStv Select is reportedly priced at R299 per month with 100 channels, while the new standalone DStv Sports package is expected to cost R399 per month and offer 115 channels.

The reported DStv Movies & Series package would cost R500 per month with 115 channels.

DStv Premium would remain the top streaming package at a reported R799 per month with 130 channels.

DStv Starter reportedly coming in at R99

At a reported R99 per month, DStv Starter would become the entry-level streaming package.

The package is expected to offer 85 channels and target viewers looking for basic entertainment alongside a limited selection of sport.

Reported content includes local entertainment such as kykNET, general news and free-to-air channels.

Sports viewers are also reportedly set to receive a taste of live action, including the Premier League Match of the Week.

What could be included with DStv Select?

DStv Select is reportedly set to cost R299 per month and include 100 channels.

The package is expected to offer a broader combination of family entertainment and sport.

Reported content includes children’s programming such as Nickelodeon, local entertainment through Mzansi Magic and South African football through SuperSport’s PSL content.

This would position Select as an option for households wanting entertainment, children’s programming and local sport without moving to one of the more expensive packages.

A standalone DStv Sports package could be the big change

One of the biggest reported changes is the introduction of a dedicated DStv Sports streaming package for R399 per month.

The package is expected to include 115 channels and target viewers primarily interested in live sport rather than DStv’s premium entertainment offering.

Reported sports coverage includes the English Premier League, UEFA competitions, UFC, WWE, cricket, local rugby and the United Rugby Championship.

However, reports indicate that not every major sporting property would be available through the standalone Sports package.

Formula 1, MotoGP and Springbok rugby test matches are reportedly set to remain exclusive to the Premium offering.

That distinction would be particularly important for sports fans considering whether the cheaper standalone package offers enough of the content they currently watch.

M-Net reportedly included in Movies & Series

For subscribers more interested in entertainment than sport, the reported DStv Movies & Series package would introduce another significant change.

Priced at a reported R500 per month with 115 channels, the package is expected to give subscribers access to M-Net and premium kykNET content without requiring a DStv Premium subscription.

M Movies+, Discovery Channel and BBC Earth are also reportedly among the channels included.

The package would effectively give entertainment-focused viewers access to some of DStv’s premium television content without paying for its full premium sports offering.

What about DStv Premium?

DStv Premium would remain the most comprehensive streaming option under the reported new structure.

The package is reportedly set to cost R799 per month and include 130 channels.

Premium is expected to combine DStv’s top entertainment and sports offerings while retaining access to sporting properties reportedly excluded from the cheaper Sports package.

These include Formula 1, MotoGP and Springbok rugby test matches.

How could the new streaming prices compare with satellite?

The reported package overhaul applies to DStv Streaming rather than customers using traditional satellite decoders.

Based on the reported new prices, Premium streaming at R799 would cost R180 less per month than the current R979 satellite Premium price.

The reported R399 Sports package would be R80 cheaper than the current R479 Compact satellite price, while Select at R299 would be R40 below the R339 Family satellite price.

Starter at R99 would cost R51 less than the R150 Access satellite package.

Movies & Series would not have a direct satellite equivalent.

At a reported R500 per month, it would cost R479 less than satellite Premium, although the two options would not provide equivalent channel line-ups.

DStv could be changing how subscribers choose packages

If the reported changes go ahead, the overhaul would move DStv Streaming away from the traditional progression through Access, Family, Compact and Compact Plus.

Instead, subscribers would have packages targeted more directly at different viewing habits.

Sports fans could opt for the reported R399 standalone Sports package, while viewers more interested in M-Net and premium entertainment could choose Movies & Series at R500.

Those wanting the broadest combination of premium sport and entertainment would still need Premium.
