Cape Town comes alive today as the much-anticipated Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade takes centre stage.

Widely recognised as Africa’s most significant cultural festival, the parade unites communities, visitors and performers in a powerful celebration of heritage, music and colour, deeply rooted in the centuries-old Kaapse Klopse tradition.

According to the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA), months of preparation have gone into delivering a world-class spectacle.

KKKA spokesperson Muneeb Gambeno says the parade is more than a procession through the city. It is an expression of resilience, identity and pride that belongs not only to Cape Town, but to South Africa as a whole.

A New Route and a Landmark Finish

This year marks a significant shift for the parade with the introduction of a new route. Performers will move along Somerset Road in Green Point before concluding inside the iconic DHL Stadium. The inclusion of this world-class venue represents a significant milestone for the festival and reflects its growing national and international significance.

Organisers expect up to 100 000 spectators to line the streets, creating an electric atmosphere as troupes fill the city with brass bands, harmonies, choreographed routines and vibrant costumes.

A First for National Television

In another historic first, the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade will be broadcast live on national television. The event airs on SABC 2 from 12:00, allowing audiences across the country to experience the spectacle in real time.

The live broadcast reinforces the parade’s role as a unifying cultural moment, opening the celebration to South Africans far beyond the parade route.

Competition Meets Community

After the parade concludes, festivities continue inside the DHL Stadium with Day One of the KKKA Kaapse Klopse Competition. Judging categories include Road March, Best Dressed and Drum Major performances.

Sixteen troupes from across the Cape Flats and surrounding communities will compete, highlighting the diversity, creativity and enduring spirit of the minstrel tradition.

The stadium event is family-friendly, with food vendors available and a zero-alcohol policy.

With additional competitions scheduled at Athlone Stadium later in January, the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade remains one of the city’s most significant summer events.
