Castle Double Malt delivers South Africa’s first luxury rail journey blending live music, vintage charm, and unforgettable moments.
A Journey Like No Other
This past weekend, the Extra Smooth Express departed Cape Town on a journey that redefined South African travel experiences. Presented by Castle Double Malt, the one-of-a-kind rail adventure paired vintage train luxury with live performances, immersive entertainment, and sweeping landscapes – culminating in a spectacular finale at the historic Elgin Railway Market.
Inspired by Castle Double Malt’s unique blend of two premium malts, the journey mirrored the beer’s story: a seamless fusion of tradition and modern artistry. From the scenic ride through the Cape Floral Kingdom to golden pints poured onboard, every detail celebrated craftsmanship, balance, and connection.
Entertainment on the Move
Stepping onto the train felt like stepping back in time. Guests were immersed in roaming entertainment that included a charismatic conductor, a magician, and a live saxophonist weaving smooth notes between carriages.
Each compartment pulsed with energy, with DJ sets and vocal performances keeping the rhythm alive as mountains and valleys rolled past. The ride was at once nostalgic and refreshingly modern – a golden afternoon soundtrack blending seamlessly with the scenery.

The Brew Master’s Experience
A highlight of the journey was the Brew Master’s Experience: an intimate tasting session guiding guests through the artistry behind Castle Double Malt’s rich, smooth flavour. Exploring the careful balance of two local malts, guests discovered the depth of craft behind the beer’s full-bodied taste and creamy foam.
This rare glimpse into the brewing process deepened appreciation for the brand’s commitment to quality, innovation, and authenticity.
An Unforgettable Elgin Finale
On arrival in Elgin, travellers were greeted by a jazz band under the Art Deco arches of the Elgin Railway Market. The venue pulsed with rhythm as host Kyeezi kept spirits high, setting the stage for a powerful lineup:
- Jay Sax brought exhilarating jazz.
- Ami Faku mesmerised with soulful vocals.
- Kwaito legends TKZee ignited pure nostalgia with their era-defining hits.
- DJ Loyd closed the night with a high-energy set.
“Performing for such an intimate yet electric crowd was unforgettable,” reflected Zwai Bala of TKZee. “There’s something magical about everyone arriving together on that train – the energy just builds until it explodes on stage.”

More Than an Event
For Castle Double Malt, the Extra Smooth Express was about more than travel or music – it was about connection.
“This was a celebration of craftsmanship and community,” said Thomas Lawrence, Brand Director. “The Extra Smooth Express is where timeless style meets modern artistry, creating memories that linger long after the last stop.”
With its debut, the Extra Smooth Express set the stage for a new tradition in unforgettable travel, taste, and entertainment – one that celebrates South Africa’s culture of shared moments.
